People came up with 'Whoever care less wins' for a reason. Maybe it's not our partner that we're losing from. It's our own demon, our self, our own thoughts. 

To love someone so much, so dearly, so delicately, you just know that you can't expect someone to love you back like that. And people generally, love differently. 

It's not a thing between your partner and yourself, it's a constant struggle between you and you inner self.
